COVID-19 Vaccine Availability

Now that the COVID-19 vaccine has been approved, we plan to continue updating Optima Health members about how and when they can receive one.

Both vaccine doses will be free for members.

When Can Members Get the Vaccine?

Vaccine allocation is managed by the state and distribution is under the direction of public health. As you may know, the COVID-19 vaccine is being distributed in phases. Healthcare workers, long-term care residents and staff, essential workers, people age 65 and older, and those considered high-risk for COVID-19 will be offered the vaccine in the earlier phases.

Members can call the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) hotline at 1-877-ASK-VDH3 (1-877-275-8343). They can also visit vdh.virginia.gov/covid-19-vaccine to see when they will be eligible to receive the vaccine based on their age, location, occupation, and health condition.

Sentara Medical Group (SMG) Patients

In accordance with the Virginia Department of Health’s COVID-19 Vaccine Plan, Sentara is able to offer a limited number of vaccines to eligible Phase 1b patients in Virginia who have an SMG primary care provider, starting with those who are 75 years and older.

Eligible patients will be contacted through their Sentara MyChart account when they are able to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment. Eligible patients will also receive an automated text and/or phone call to alert them of their opportunity to schedule an appointment.

Members Seeing Other Providers

Other Optima Health members will be able to get the vaccine from their physician or local health department, when available. Plans are in development for mass vaccination clinics through local health departments across the state.
