Williamsburg, VA – June 16, 2008 – Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center was presented with a “Partner Recognition Award” at the 2008 Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Banquet held in Pittsburgh on May 20, 2008.

The Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards celebrate the achievements and commitment of healthcare’s environmental champions. The awards give special recognition to facilities whose efforts are aimed at eliminating mercury, preventing pollution and minimizing waste.

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center launched an aggressive “Green” agenda in 2007, beginning with its recycling program. With a first-year goal to reduce solid waste by 50 percent, the medical center hopes to eventually recycle up to 65 percent of the solid waste coming out of its campus. The hospital has recycled over 65,000 pounds of material in its first six months of recycling. Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center has also removed 41 pounds of mercury out of the hospital by replacing more than 170 wall-mounted blood-pressure cuffs.

Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center was also awarded with the 2007 Peninsula Clean Business Award from the York County Chamber of Commerce.

Practice Greenhealth is overseen by Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E). Jointly founded by the American Hospital Association, the Environmental Protection Agency, Health Care Without Harm, and the American Nurses Association, H2E is an independent not-for-profit organization focused on improving health care’s environmental performance. H2E envisions a healthcare system committed to reduced waste volume and toxicity, efficient energy and water use, clean air, safe work practices and safe buildings.
