Today, Ellen Pellow stands tall and is proud of the successes she’s made while being a member of Optima Health’s WalkAbout with Healthy Edge program.
The WalkAbout with Health Edge program is a six-month walking program that encourages participants to start moving to get healthy and stay healthy. Pedometers allow members to count the total number of steps each day and increase the number to 10,000 or more.
Before the program, Pellow was overweight and dealing with some serious health issues. That was enough to get her motivated to sign-up for the program.
“I had asthma and high blood pressure. I was looking for something to add to my workout routine and the WalkAbout program sounded like a good idea,” comments Pellow. “Since joining the program, I’ve lost 113 pounds, I work out at the community center and I’m on Weight Watchers.”
According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s office, only 32% of Americans get the necessary amount of physical activity recommended. The recommendation is to exercise 30 minutes per day, at least three times per week. Walking is something most of us do everyday and can be part of an increased physical activity plan.
Ellen is making strides every day to improve her health by walking 5 to 12 miles per day.
“With the WalkAbout program I get a log book to track my progress. Incentives are given on the number of walks you take…15, 30 and 50. It’s not the distance that you walk, it’s the number of times that you do the WalkAbout,” she continues.
