Most Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) members no longer need a referral to see a participating specialist.*
This policy went into effect January 1, 2008.
Members still need to coordinate care through their primary care physician. However, if a specialist's care is needed, members will no longer need a referral as long as the specialist they choose participates in their network.
