Vernon Humphries has worked hard all his life taking care of others as a janitor for Virginia Beach Public Schools. He has recently had to go on long-term disability due to health issues, specifically his diabetes. Over the past few years he has struggled with a variety of health problems related to his diabetes and is now working to heal a wound on his foot.
“My father and mother had the disease (diabetes) and they told me to get myself checked at the time, but I didn’t. I ended up with it. Here I am,” comments Vernon.
Vernon struggles to maintain his appropriate weight, to eat healthy and to keep his blood pressure under control. But, he’s got two ladies that won’t give up on him, Tiffany Portlock and Janet Kennon, both case managers for Optima Health’s Clinical Care Services department.
“The counselors call me to check on me to see if I’ve taken my medicines and to see if I’m doing alright,” comments Vernon. Vernon knows that both women have his best interest at heart and listens as they help guide him to improved health. It’s hard for him to give up many of the foods he loves because of his illness.
With diabetes, Vernon is required to take insulin every day. The case managers have helped him to get the insulin that he needs at a discounted rate since times are a bit tougher since Vernon went on disability. They also help him with his insurance paperwork and disability benefits.
All and all, Vernon is glad to have people who care enough to keep him on the right track.
