New Surgery Center and Expanded Emergency Department
June 15, 2006 - Newport News, VA-- Sentara Port Warwick II—the 2nd phase of Sentara’s outpatient campus off Jefferson Avenue—opened Monday June 26 with a brand new ambulatory surgery center. An expanded emergency department relocated to a new building on the campus.
Totaling 57,000 square feet, the $10 million Sentara Port Warwick II offers a combination of new and relocated services. The relocated emergency department features16 larger treatment rooms and a more efficient format, offering patients quicker service by the same board-certified emergency physicians who serve Sentara CarePlex Hospital. Without any disruption of service, the emergency department opened in its new location on the Port Warwick campus, 1031 Loftis Boulevard with its normal hours of 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The new emergency department phone number is 736-9800.
Other services relocated to Sentara Port Warwick II include endoscopy, laboratory, and upgraded imaging services including a new 32-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner for quicker imaging of body tissue and organs.
“With hospitals tending to sicker patients, more health care services can be rendered in quieter, more convenient outpatient settings. We’re providing this unique service to Peninsula patients,” says Administrator of Sentara CarePlex Hospital Megan Perry, who oversees Sentara Port Warwick.
New to the campus will be outpatient surgery and lithotripsy services that pulverize kidney stones with shock waves instead of through traditional surgery. Beginning June 26, dozens of board certified surgeons already practicing at Sentara CarePlex Hospital will perform surgeries in the ambulatory surgery center’s two operating rooms. Nearly 900 outpatient procedures are expected to be performed during the rest of 2006, including orthopedics, lithotripsy, podiatry, gynecology, ear nose and throat procedures, general, vascular and minimally invasive weight loss surgeries, as well as cancer care.
In addition to two operating rooms, the ambulatory surgery center features two endoscopy procedure rooms, 16 Surgical Prep/Recovery Rooms, and a five-bed post anesthesia care unit.
With the addition of the surgery center, Sentara Port Warwick offers Peninsula patients a unique experience—true comprehensive outpatient care that combines surgery, emergency and imaging in one convenient outpatient setting.
