Russell Midgett is grateful to be alive. After retiring from a 27-year career with the Norfolk Police Department, Russell’s plans did not include facing a life-threatening medical condition. With the help of Optima Health and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Russell is now healthy and can enjoy the simple things in life he loves so much -- fishing, working in his yard and enjoying life on the Outer Banks in North Carolina.
In March of 2007, Russell had kidney failure as a result of a lifelong condition that had deteriorated his kidneys. Fortunately, he had Optima Health and a loving spouse, Sharalyn, who had an adequate match for his kidney.
Both Russell and Sharalyn are Optima Health members. Russell is glad he and his wife chose Optima Health, especially at this stage in their lives.

After Russell’s condition was diagnosed, Optima Health alleviated many of the Midgetts’ concerns. “Optima took care of everything. I didn’t have any worries,” said Sharalyn.
Russell was treated for his condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and praised the care he received from Sentara. “My services there were impeccable. They saved my life,” Russell said.
Shortly after the transplant, Russell became seriously ill with a mega virus. Doctors told Sharalyn that her husband would need home healthcare and they weren’t sure if his health insurance would cover the expenses.
“That’s when the Optima healthcare person became involved. She orchestrated the whole thing so we could have healthcare in the comfort of our home,” recounts Sharalyn.
Optima Health continues to play an important role in the maintenance of Russell’s health. Russell receives regular calls from Paulette Carlson, his Optima Health case manager. Paulette checks to see how Russell is feeling and provides guidance to help him stay healthy.
