Evan Johnson hadn’t been to a doctor for several years since moving from Kansas to Virginia to accept a position at the Navy Exchange at the Norfolk Naval Base. During his employer's annual health fair, he decided it would be a good chance to get checked out.
At the Optima Health sponsored health fair, a prevention nurse specialist checked Evan’s cholesterol, blood pressure and heart rate. She noted that Evan had an irregular heart beat and encouraged him to seek medical attention from a physician as soon as possible. Evan heeded her warning and scheduled an appointment the next day. Within a few weeks he was hospitalized at Sentara’s Heart Hospital with an enlarged heart and leaky aortic valve and surgery was performed to correct an aortic aneurysm.
Evan credits Optima Health with saving his life.
“If I hadn’t gone to the health fair and had a nurse insist that I see a doctor, I’d be dead now,” comments Johnson about his experience.
The Navy Exchange now uses Evan’s story as an example to employees to encourage them to attend the health fair. Evan is proud to be an example for his coworkers because he has his life to thank for it.
Optima’s Health and Prevention Program offers a wide-range of services and tools aimed at improving and preventing illness before it happens.
