Hunter Goldbach is four-years-old and has a rare genetic disease. He just began walking a few months ago, he speaks only a handful of words and he eats every meal through a feeding tube. He recently visited one of only three physicians in the country who treat children with his disease. Optima Health sent the Goldbach’s to Atlanta, Georgia to meet with the specialist and find out some answers to their many questions.
Hunter’s mom, Rebecca, attributes much of his progress to Optima case manager, Donna Hart-Becker, for she has spent countless hours identifying ways to get Hunter the care he needs.
“She embraced us as a family, not just a number. She sees him as the little boy that he is,” comments Rebecca. As the mother of a special needs child, Rebecca was poised to fight her insurance company every step of the way to ensure that Hunter received the care and services she felt was vital for him to remain healthy.
With a diagnosis, and referral to see a world expert on his disease, she spoke with Donna to find out whether Optima was going to approve the trip to Georgia. Donna moved quickly and began researching the disease. She compiled dozens of pages of information to present to the medical review board. Once Hunter’s treatment was approved she called Rebecca and told her to “pack her bags”. Rebecca sobbed she was so overjoyed. She felt hope that her little boy could be made whole again. With the proper treatment Hunter could make progress and become a productive member of society.
Donna’s not Hunter’s first case manager, but she by far stands out the most. Rebecca counts herself lucky to have Donna as her guardian angel.
